At any point in time, anyone can experience calf pain caused by a variety of reasons. Often, the calf pain is treatable and can last for just few days. Other calf muscles pain, however, are severe and would need a health professional’s attention. As most calf pain is simply self-induced due to sudden stretches and jerky movements, home remedies can be done to alleviate calf pain swelling and aches.

For more serious calf pain cases, seeking calf pain treatment from a doctor is best advised, especially when the calf pain symptoms become persistent, and if calf pain swelling does not go away. Usually, a serious calf pain means cramps and throbbing at night time and there is unexplained pain and tenderness in the calf muscle area that lasts for over three days. A doctor would give you calf pain treatment especially for cases where in there is already a discoloration in the area and calf pain swelling that lasts longer than 24 hours.

Calf pain symptoms could also mean a more serious case of circulatory problems where calf pain would suddenly show up while playing sports and doing daily routines. This arterial insufficiency or hardening of arteries renders calf muscles needing blood and oxygen at normal levels. Painful cramping comes quickly with this particular calf pain, and disappears just as fast. Doctors call this condition as heart attack of the lower leg.
Another serious calf pain symptom would be the onset of pain and swelling while body is at rest. This could mean venous insufficiency where the blood is not pumping out and causing pain because of this abnormal blood flow. Doctors often say that blood arising from venous insufficiency can lead muscle pain inflammation and clotting in the veins. Even more serious would be the greater pain and health risk posed by a breaking blood clots movement to other parts of the body.

The best treatments you can do at home to ease yourself of calf muscles pain and swelling would be resting your legs from wear. Apply cold or ice packs on the area where calf muscles pain is felt. Do this application for 20 minutes at least 3 times a day. Also, it helps to elevate your lower legs to shoulder level as this will ease calf muscle swelling. This goes for the simple wear and tear of calf muscles. Taking of over-the-counter pain relievers also work as they lessen calf pain and swelling. If you can stand up and walk, try walking a few steps then walk longer steps until you could not tolerate pain. This will help the calf pain to be less prevalent.
Other helpful home remedies include applying heat through heating pads or blankets as they ease pain, and use hoses prescribed by physicians as they improve and relieve pain.’

In all, you would know when a calf pain has become needy of a professional care, and when you can treat it at home. But the best way to deal with calf pain is keep your body fit so you won’t get it!

Calf pain occurs on the lower part of the leg as a result of pulled or torn muscles from sports or other daily routines. Self-induced at most times, calf pain or strain is similar to Achilles tendon tear but occurs in the higher area. A sudden cramp ache is felt, and it is often followed by calf pain swelling that persists in serious cases, but subsides after a day or two in simple grades of muscle strain. Calf pain causes a person to sit and rest more often and refrain from the usual rigors of sports and physical activities

It is important for one to understand that most calf pain result from sudden jerks and forced stretch movements, and also during sudden acceleration in running and swift changing of directions or steps. Calf pain symptoms often become basis for home medications, but it is always safe to seek the doctor’s advice and let them work on the best calf pain treatment. In cases of an injury, one gets recurring calf pain, discoloration of the lower leg area, bleeding, and persistent calf pain swelling, the doctor should be contacted immediately.

One should also understand that there are different kinds of calf pain and physicians would base calf pain treatment depending on the level of severity. Some calf pain symptoms result from micro tearing of muscle fibers while others are complete tearing and would need over 3 months before recovery.

Calf pain treatment lists usually start with R.I.C.E. or rest, ice, compression and elevation. Both doctors and your own mom would recommend this, starting with relieving your lower legs of movements and stress. Then ice packs are applied to calf pain swelling area at least 3 times a day, and the wrapping of calf to keep blood from pooling in the foot. Then the leg is elevated at shoulder level to reduce swelling.

Simple methods of rehabilitation of calf pain and injuries could also be done at home, starting with resting the muscle and refraining from activities that cause pain. Resume your sports only when you’re totally freed from calf pain symptoms.

Also, do passive stretching when the severe calf pain has gone and do muscle stretch in both legs. Gently pull your foot and toes with legs up straight and hold for a few seconds. Repeat this process no more than 10 times. Later on, do active stretching and progressive strengthening exercises. Before doing so, always wear exercise tubing to prevent calf pain symptoms from coming back.

It is very important that your rehabilitation needs to be suited for you and your calf pain injury, so always get your physician’s approval before pursuing any rehab method on your own. Make sure you are free of calf pain and calf pain swelling when you can already jog, jump or walk without limping or discomfort. Your physician would also determine if you’re capable of full range motion and strength to pursue the rigors of rehabilitation.

For those who cannot relate to calf pain, it is one of the top reasons why NBA and MLB pros are seating on the benches. Truth is, calf pain symptoms may have been experienced by most of us, but are shrugged-off. Others also experience sore calves and dull aches in their calf muscles and directly cast blame on poor shoe fit. All these can be helped from happening, and if calf pain symptoms have become very noticeable, then there are calf pain treatments to choose from to get relief.

Here are some useful calf pain remedies

You can also try taking a rest, putting ice, applying compression and elevation. Give your painful calf a rest for a day or two, apply ice packs on the area for 15-20 minutes at least three times a day, compress the calf area with an elastic bandage, and elevate your legs to neck level.

Wear arch support in your shoe as they help check mechanical imbalances that affect your walking. Remember, calf pain causes you to walk or run with difficulty, so to prevent such event, proper shoe support is most advised. Once the calf muscle swelling start to subside, rub pain-relieving balm in the area and wrap the area in plastic. Top the plastic wrap with elastic bandage as the process helps retain the heat and relax the calf muscles.

If the calf pain you’re experiencing is not a result of an injury, then it’s best to conduct overhaul of your footwear. More and more cases are reported that calf pain symptoms are mere results of wrong shoes, and serious cases are results of simple calf pain exacerbated by continued using of the wrong shoes. Running shoes are best choices of footwear and one should get a good, comfortable and fitting pair and wear it often. Make sure that your shoes’ shocks are right for you. Wrong shocks or worn shocks often contribute to increasing calf pain. It is recommended that worn shoes should be replaced, especially when its thread has shown signs of wear. If so, get a new pair of shoes or replace the soles to give you the right shock.

Reduce calf muscles pain with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications which can be purchased over the counter. There are a number of drugs out there that eases the pain and act on calf muscle swelling as well. But if pain and swelling, or any one of these, still persists after seven days, seek medical attention to get the apt calf pain treatment. Always remember, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Keep yourself fit to avoid calf pain and more serious illnesses and ailments.

Getting calf pain probably is the most common muscle strain that could happen to anyone. Although calf muscles pain are most highlighted when an NBA star or tennis pro gets in the injured list, a regular person or a sports buff can get it as well. One should identify various calf pain causes to understand how it can be medicated, as well as knowing calf pain symptoms apart from other muscle ailments. In the United States alone, calf pain attributes to a large portion of visits to the doctor, with more than half of these injuries happening to active young adults, mostly men.

Calf pain occurs when the muscles are stretched beyond limits due to sudden jerking or over-exertion, the legs being overly-vulnerable because they are the most used for any activity, whether daily routines or sports. It is important to know different muscle strains to single-out the real source of calf pain, and then apply the calf pain treatment fitted. So what are calf muscle symptoms one should watch out for? When there’s calf muscle pain and tenderness

after playing a game or rigorous walking or running. Take note also when there is local muscle swelling and discoloration after an accident, as most likely the calf muscle pain needs serious medical attention. Other patients report decrease in muscle strength and difficulty walking, and then the doctor diagnoses such calf pain symptoms if it needs simple treatment or serious medication.

Calf muscle or gastrocnemius strain occurs from sudden upward bends and when the calf muscle is stretched, causing minor tearing in the muscular fiber. On the other hand, plantaris strain causes more calf muscle pain as it comes with slightly larger muscle tearing in the knee area. Hamstring strain or what is commonly known as pulled hamstring is when these long muscles extending down the back part of the thigh are injured. Most of the time, hamstrings are pulled during running, kicking or jumping. Another calf pain source would be quadriceps strain wherein the large group of muscles in the thigh area are torn, rendering slight to severe pain in that leg region.

Doctors have devised a classification of calf pains and other muscle strains into three different grades, with Grade 1 being the mildest form, and Grade 3 being the most severe case of muscle fiber damage. While muscle strength is normal with Grade 1 as only a few calf muscle fibers are stretched or torn, there is noticeable calf muscle swelling with Grade 2, coupled by minor loss of strength in the calf area. For Grade 3, calf muscles pain become greater as fibers are torn. This particular calf pain causes the leg without strength.

For calf pain treatment, most doctors would recommend the simple resting of injured muscle and applying ice to the injured area to reduce calf muscle swelling. Also, compression with elastic bandage and elevating the injured leg would be advised. In addition, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs would be prescribed by doctors to alleviate calf pain swelling and the throbbing ache in the area.

It is wise to call the doctor promptly if you feel a “pop” in your leg when the calf injury took place, especially if followed by severe calf pain, discoloration and calf pain swelling. Most likely, when this takes place the calf pain treatment cannot be done at home.

Anyone can experience the self-induced calf muscle pain, rendering the lower back portion of the leg feeling cramp for a short period. Most calf pain also causes a person to be unable to walk normally and forego sports activities. Experts would say that calf muscle pain often results from too much exercise or sudden stretching of the muscles, most often just a small tearing of muscle fiber. Some severe cases of muscle tearing in the area would need specific calf pain treatment from health professionals.

Some calf pain symptoms are apparent when the two gastrocnemeius and soleus muscles of the calf are jerked and stretched suddenly beyond normal levels. Those active in any form of sports have stronger tendencies for stretching these muscles and then exhibit calf pain swelling. Often times, athletes come across cases of calf pain from overexertion, fatigue and slow adjustment to weather changes.

Improper exercise and stretching of muscles mostly cause calf muscle pain, like sudden stress and a direct blow to the calf muscle area. Also, doctors have cited that excessive steep hills running, calcium deficiency and lack of magnesium and dehydration could cause calf muscles pain as well.

Generally, one could experience calf pain symptoms to know an onset of tearing in the muscles. These symptoms should be known to any person so he can determine the degree of calf pain and know the proper calf pain treatment.

First, when there is stiffness in the calf muscle area after an exercise, there could be micro tearing of muscle fibers known as Grade 1 muscle strains. These are easily cured within 3 weeks, whereby Grade 2 muscle strain will need at least 2 months of healing of the partial tearing of muscle fibers. Grade 3 is when there is complete tearing of muscle fibers and would need more than 3 months to heal the torn muscle.

Another calf pain symptom would be aching calves which can be caused by varicose veins and is usually identified as Grade 2 muscle strain. When there is calf pain swelling, it could also be that there is inflammation of subcutaneous tissues or skin in the calf area; hence, calf pains are experienced.

So how are does one treat a calf pain? Once diagnosed, the calf pain treatment depends on the severity of calf muscle pain, ranging from complete rest to your lower legs and forgoing sports for the meantime. It is best to apply cold pack to the calf area 3 to 4 times a day for at least 20 minutes. When more calf pain swelling is noticed in the lower leg, wear an elastic compression bandage to reduce swelling and elevate your leg higher than your heart’s level. If the calf pain swelling persists and there is tenderness in the area, take pain relievers like aspirin or acetaminophen. Only when the calf pain and swelling has reduced should slight muscle stretching activities should be resumed.

You enjoy playing sports and you do a lot of outdoor activities. You are really adventurous and you love moving around. You cannot just stay in one corner because you love walking, running, hiking, everything. You just love to move. But hey, what if you suddenly can’t move? What will you do? Well, you don’t have to panic. If you happen to be experiencing contractions at the lower part of your body, relax because you are just experiencing calf pain. It’s not an isolated incident. Most outgoing and adventurous people experience calf muscles pain though they usually refer to them as body pains.

So to confirm if what you have is really a calf pain, you must check out on these symptoms. You must probably be feeling some pain on your legs, especially at the back. It is where your calf is found. This means your calf muscles are tightening, giving you cramps which make it harder for you to move. For an outgoing person like you, this is really a big deal because you cannot go on experiencing cramps on your feet. You can check on the size of your calf. If it looks like bigger than its usual size, then that means it is swelling. Calf muscles swelling are an indication that you are really experiencing calf pain. While you can pull it or massage it all by yourself, it is best recommended that you consult a doctor especially when you feel that the pain is not normal anymore. It can lead to a more complicated problem if it remains ignored.

If it is already confirmed that you have calf pains, what you should do now is to treat it with some available ways without the help of the doctor. The best thing you need to do is rest. You can take a leave from going out for at least two days, and while resting, you can put an ice over the affected area. After that, you can rub a pain-reliever balm over the area and then wrap it with elastic bandage. Then, every two or three days, be sure to elevate your affected foot within fifteen to twenty minutes.

Then, you can do yourself a semi-therapy by stretching every morning and doing some walking. You can do a little exercise but be sure you don’t go beyond what is not necessary. Do not force yourself with stretching if you can’t do it yet because it might just worsen the condition of your muscles. However, exercise like yoga and stretching are important to relax the muscles. By doing these, the blood circulation also gets to smoothen, allowing the muscles to breathe.

A contraction caused by calf pain is a real tendency for the workaholic and out goers. If you keep on doing strenuous activities without taking care of your body parts, then you would only defeat your purpose of getting fit. So now that you know how to treat calf pain, be sure you’ll never experience it again by taking many things into consideration to protect your body.

If you are one of those people who work 24/7, exhausting all your body’s energy and dragging your body to move everyday without getting the right kind of exercise, food, and sleep, then you must probably be experiencing body pains, especially on the thigh and the calf part. You might ignore the pain, thinking that is just a simple condition that does not need medical attention. However, you should know that there are some simple cases of unilateral calf pain that can actually lead to serious problems. Therefore, you need to have diagnostic testing.

How can diagnostic tests help you? You just have to undergo some tests and depend on the experts to figure out what you are really experiencing.

What problems can you possibly expect to occur if you are not able to undergo testing? You can expect BBaker’s cyst, deep vein thrombosis, among other complications. You do not want to have these conditions, right? That is why undergoing diagnostic testing before everything’s too late is necessary. Testing may include different medical procedures but all of these, such as muscle biopsy, are important to determine your condition.
If you are not familiar with MRI, it is high time for you to realize that it can help you understand what you are going through. It is the commonly used apparatus to diagnose unilateral calf pain.

You can also undergo CT scan. Why not try ultrasound also to have a visual representation of what’s inside your muscles? However, you should understand that you have to undergo a number of tests to further validate all the results. You have to repeat the tests a number of times to ensure that the results in all of the procedures suggest only one condition. In that way, you would know if the calf pain you are experiencing is prone to more serious and complicated conditions.

What will you do if, for example, your diagnostic results say that your calf pain is not just an ordinary pain and that you are already experiencing some complications on your cardiovascular system, what would you do? You would surely be advised by your doctor to undergo a surgery. You would also be advised to take an anti-biotic for the continuous treatment of your condition. In the extreme cases, there are forms of unilateral calf pain that lead to sarcoma development. This would need some sessions of chemotherapy and oncology. You do not have to worry about the procedures because there are some hospitals that provide cheaper prices. On the other hand, you must not sacrifice quality just to find cheaper offers. You have to ensure that the doctor you will be asking help from specializes in the field so you would get the best services and treatment.
See, you must not just ignore any pain that you experience.

You wouldn’t know, the more you disregard of what you thought are simple body pains, the more you put yourself into danger. So, now that you know the risks, you should be responsible in asking medical help if you know you are experiencing regular and too much pain. Nothing would be lost. You will just prevent yourself from having more serious problems.

Most probably, you would mistake calf pain as one of the muscle pains you usually feel when your body is tired. You wouldn’t categorize it as calf pain because it is not usually discussed about. This condition is unfamiliar to people, much more the right calf pain treatment. However, this condition can lead to serious problems if always ignored. If you are experiencing body pains, it is your responsibility to know the causes and treatments related to back pains, especially to calf pain.

For your information, one of the usual calf pain causes is the frequent wearing of high heels. If you wear shoes with three to five inches heels every day and you experience pain on your feet, you must know that this is not just a simple muscle ache. This is an example of a calf pain condition. You would usually feel cramps and contractions which will give you a hard time to move or to walk. However, lower back pains are mostly felt running down the legs then down to the toes. Some people complain that their legs feel a little numb.

But, on a deeper note, what really causes the calf muscles to swell? It can be traced down to some problems on your spinal nerve root. This can be found on the lower area of your back. It may also happen that you do not experience back pains yet, still you experience calf muscles pain especially at night. There can be other causes to calf pain. It can be because of too much physical activities, injuries, or uncomfortable footwear.

Now you ask, what is the proven calf pain treatment? There are many suggestions to that but before you proceed with any treatment; you have to understand first the muscles that are involved in this condition. The gastrocnemius and the soleus muscle are the muscles involved here. If you are not familiar with the two, the gastrocnemius muscles are found at the lower area of the thigh. On the other hand, the soleus muscle is found at the leg bones.

Just imagine if you do not have these muscles. You cannot bend your ankle and you are incapable of pointing your toes right at the ground. These are what gastrocnemius muscle can do for you. On the other hand, soleus muscle gives your legs the stability to stand with your weight line falling just in front of your knee. This is the reason why you’re having some back pains whenever these muscles tighten.

Now, with your understanding of the calf muscles involved in your calf pain, you must understand that you need to treat first your dorsiflexor muscles. These muscles are just in front of your leg. These muscles are affected by the contractions brought about by the calf pain swelling. You can walk on your heels so that you can avoid the excruciating pain of contractions.

Stretching and yoga are two of the best ways to avoid having contractions, specifically calf muscle pain. These exercises relax the muscles. You must also always wear the right kind of shoes to provide comfort to your feet.

Suppose you always include jogging in your daily routine. You run around the oval for an hour every day, and you have already gotten used to that routine. But one day, you run for just how many meters and you suddenly feel the need to stop. It is all because you cannot move. You feel contractions on your foot and you just can’t take a step. That is one manifestation of calf pain. However, calf pain sometimes is felt simply and you wouldn’t know at first that it is serious.

You can probably feel your lower leg aching. You would think that it is just a simple pain caused by muscle stress. Well, yes, but you have to know that there are specific reasons and roots of calf muscles pain. One is tendonitis, or the inflammation of the muscle tendons. Calf pain can also be caused by some problems on your foot like if you have worn out shoes that do not allow your feet to breathe because it does not fit well. Do not worry because calf pain can be treated and it is best when you consult a doctor. However, if these are just simple pains, you can also do simple things to prevent the suffering.

For one, you can always go to your nearest drugstore and ask for a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug also known as NSAID. It is easy to buy over-the-counter. An example of this is Ibuprofen.

Of course, calf pain treatment involves rest. You need to relax your calves to be able to function well again. The muscles might probably need one to two days for rest while icing over the area for 20 minutes. You can do this every 2 or 3 hours, depending on how bad the contractions feel. You can also compress it with a bandage while having it elevated. Why not try applying moist heat also? It has been proven to be effective. Actually, it is advised that applying a balm can relieve the pain of the calf muscle and the swelling too, and that it would be better if you rub it first on the affected area then have it wrapped with the use of an elastic bandage.

You might also find using lifts for additional pressure on the heels. They can definitely help your muscles feel relaxed. You can buy them from the heel lifts at the nearest shoe stores. Or you can do heel lifts just by yourself by cutting a cork with your desired size. If not, you can also try wearing arch supports. Arch supports are worn inside the shoes and correct the imbalances that cause your difficulty in walking. Wearing arch supports help you walk the natural and easier way.

And talking about your footwear, you must also ensure that you’re wearing the shoes just right for your size. You must not wear shoes that do not allow your feet to breathe. It will also tighten the muscle, causing you to have difficulty in walking.

Of course, the last thing is that you should always make your calves feel comfy by wearing comfortable shoes such as running shoes. You must also avoid wearing high heels, or if you really need to, be sure to just use one inch or two inch high heels only.

If you are experiencing lower back pains, you would surely be experiencing calf pain. This calf pain arises from the tightness of the calf muscles, which is more prone to women who are always wearing high heeled shoes. Those who experience cramps on calf pains only mean there are problems with their muscles, coming from the spinal nerves in the lower back of the body. However, you do not have to have lower back pains just to say you are experiencing calf pain. If you wake up in the middle of your sleep because of calf cramps, then you have calf pain symptoms.

If you want to know more about calf pain causes and calf pain treatments, you first have to know what calf muscles are. Well, you should know that you have three calf muscles. The first two are called gastrocnemius muscles, which are the inner and outer muscles also known as media and lateral. These muscles are located somewhere above your knee. The third muscle is called the soleus muscle. This muscle is placed on the tibia and fibula bones. These bones are actually your leg bones. Without the soleus and gastronemius muscles, you cannot bend your ankle as well as your foot. Therefore, you cannot point your toes down the ground. Thanks to these muscles as they are very important for your feet movement. So, if you are experiencing calf pain swelling, you are not able to step flat with your heels onto the ground. It is because of the tightening of their calf muscles. With that, you have the tendency of falling because you have problems with your heels. You should thank your soleus muscle for making it easier for you to stand because it is relaxed during this time. With that, your leg is stable.

For the calf pain treatment, you should first treat the dorsiflexor muscles, those found at the foot and ankle so that you can avoid contractions. You need to have these contractions shortened. You can try walking with your heels on the ground to shorten and eventually do away with the contractions of these dorsiflexor muscles. And of course, you have to solve the primary and root cause of your calf pain, and you can do that by having your spinal nerve root treated.

If you still continue to experience lengthened contractions, you should have all these muscles treated. You should know how to shorten these contractions. As mentioned earlier, your dorsiflexors muscles in your foot and ankle must be treated, same with the gluteus maximus muscles, rectus femoris muscles, spinal extensor muscles, and adductor magnus muscles, because these are the muscles that would most likely experience contractions when you have calf pain. You must consult all of these to your doctor and ask for the best method that you can use to shorten these contractions. Calf pain is hard to endure, and you cannot bear it until forever so might as well act upon it and have it treated earlier before it gets too late.
